Speech Time Calculator

Paste a script, or enter the word count, and this returns how long it takes to say out loud at the speaking rate you choose. The named bands run from 100 words a minute for slow deliberate delivery, through 120 for a measured presentation and 150 for average conversational English, up to 180 for fast delivery, and there is a box for a rate you have timed yourself. A third action runs it the other way, turning a ten minute slot into a word count and a page count. Reading silently is faster than speaking, so a script always takes longer to deliver than it took to read.

Calculator Type

Paste the script. The words are counted and turned into a delivery time at the rate you pick.

Pick the band that matches the delivery. A rehearsed talk with pauses for slides sits nearer 120 than 150.
Only used when the rate above is set to your own. Read a page aloud, time it, divide the words by the minutes.
Words alone never fill the slot. Add time for applause, questions, a demo or a slow start.

You have been given ten minutes. This says how many words that is, and how many pages.

Questions, applause, a demo or the walk to the lectern. This is taken off the slot before the words are counted.
