401k Contribution Calculator

This works out what to set on the payroll page rather than projecting a balance to retirement. One tab takes your salary, how often you are paid, your age at the end of the year and what you have already deferred, and returns the dollars per paycheck and the deferral percentage that reach the annual limit with the paychecks you have left, along with the employer match that earns. The other takes your pay, your age and the employer contributions and works out how much you are allowed to put in at all, including the age 50 catch-up, the higher band for ages 60 to 63 and the ceiling on everything going into the account. Every IRS limit is an input here, because all of them are reindexed each year.

Calculator Type
Catch-up goes by the age you reach during the year, not your age today.
Your own contributions so far. Employer money does not go here.
Leave at 0 to aim at the full limit.
A 50% match means 50 cents for every dollar you put in.
The IRS indexes this every year. Check the figure for the year you are in and put it here. Enter 0 to ignore the limit entirely.
Also indexed. Available from the year you reach 50.
SECURE 2.0 gives a higher catch-up in the years you are 60, 61, 62 or 63, and it drops back at 64. Not every plan has adopted it.
