Corn Yield Calculator

This estimates a field's corn yield in bushels per acre by the yield component method used by the extension services. Count the harvestable ears in a measured length of row, average the kernel rows and the kernels down a row on a few ears, and enter the row spacing and the kernels-per-bushel factor; the result gives the yield along with ears per acre, kernels per acre and the row length that makes an ear count read straight off as ears per thousandth of an acre. The factor is an input because it is really kernel size in disguise, running from about 85 when grain fill is good to about 95 when it is stressed, and the yield is printed at both. It is a sample-based estimate, so count in several spots and average them.

Measure the Rows In
Metric also returns the yield in tonnes per hectare, at the same 15.5 percent moisture the bushel is defined at.
Inches, centre to centre between rows.
Count over 17 ft 5 in in rows 30 inches apart and the ear count reads straight off as ears per thousandth of an acre.
Count only ears with grain on them. A barren stalk is not an ear.
Average of several ears. Corn almost always has an even number of rows.
The fudge factor. 85 for a good grain fill and big kernels, 90 average, 95 for a stressed finish and small kernels.

Count and Yield Per
A hectare is 2.47 acres, so an ear count per hectare is the larger number. The yield comes back in tonnes per hectare, at the same 15.5 percent moisture the bushel is defined at.
Per acre or per hectare, whichever you picked above.
Kernel rows multiplied by kernels down a row, averaged over several ears.
The fudge factor. 85 for a good grain fill and big kernels, 90 average, 95 for a stressed finish and small kernels.
