Plant Spacing Calculator

This calculator turns a plant spacing into a plant count. Give it a bed in feet with the in-row and between-row spacing in inches and it returns the rows that fit, the plants per row, the total and the space left over at each end. A second mode lays the rows out staggered, where every second row is offset by half a spacing so the rows only need 0.866 of the spacing between them, and compares that count against a plain square grid. The third mode takes an area you have already measured and returns the plants needed to cover it, the ground each one occupies and the plants per hundred square feet.

Measure the bed, then give the spacing centre to centre. Plants sit half a spacing in from each edge.

Measured along the rows.
Measured across the rows.
Centre to centre between neighbouring plants in the same row.
Usually wider than the in-row spacing so you can walk or hoe between rows.
Leave at zero to skip the cost line.

Every second row is offset by half a spacing, so the rows can sit closer without any two plants crowding.
