Watt Hour Calculator

Watt hours measure an amount of energy: one watt held for one hour. Enter a power draw and a time, or a battery's capacity and its nominal voltage, and the tool returns the energy in watt hours, kilowatt hours and joules. A third action runs the same arithmetic backwards, turning stored watt hours and a load into a runtime, with an allowance for the losses in a power bank or an inverter. Milliamp hours on their own are a charge rather than an energy, which is why the voltage has to be asked for.

The rating plate figure and how long it runs. One watt held for one hour is one watt hour.

Capacity Unit

Turns an mAh or Ah label into energy. This needs the nominal voltage, because charge alone does not tell you how much energy is in the cell.

The cell voltage printed on the pack, not the 5 V a USB port hands out. A single lithium ion cell is 3.6 or 3.7 V, a LiFePO4 cell 3.2 V, a lead acid block 12 V.

How long a given store of energy lasts at a steady draw, with a slice taken off for conversion losses.

Leave at 100 for a straight draw. A USB power bank or an inverter loses roughly 10 to 20 percent turning cell voltage into output voltage.
