Arrow Speed Calculator

Estimates how fast an arrow leaves a compound bow by taking the bow's advertised IBO or ATA rating and adjusting it for the draw length, draw weight, arrow grain weight and string accessories you actually shoot. It returns a speed in feet per second with kinetic energy, momentum and grains per pound, and shows each adjustment on its own line so you can see where the speed went. A second mode does the exact energy and momentum arithmetic on a speed you have already chronographed. The adjustment rule is a pro shop rule of thumb rather than physics, so expect to be within about ten feet per second of the real figure.

Calculator Type

Adjusts the advertised IBO or ATA rating for the draw length, draw weight and arrow you actually shoot.

The advertised speed from the bow maker, measured at 30 in, 70 lb and 350 grains.
The finished arrow on a scale: shaft, insert, point, nock, fletching and wraps.
Roughly 3 fps for a peep and 3 for a loop and silencers. Set it to 0 for a bare string.

Once you have chronographed the arrow, this is the exact arithmetic on the number you measured.

Straight off a chronograph, at the bow.
The finished arrow on a scale: shaft, insert, point, nock, fletching and wraps.
Fill this in for the grains per pound figure. Leave it at zero to skip that.
