Tire Size Gear Ratio Calculator

Fitting taller tires changes the gearing whether you meant it to or not, because the tire diameter divides everything between the engine and the road. Enter the size you had, the size you are fitting and the axle ratio on the door sticker, and this returns the ratio the old axle now behaves like, the ratio that would restore the original gearing, the nearest one actually sold, the engine rpm before and after at a cruising speed, and the speedometer and odometer error the change introduces. Both sidewall markings and flotation sizes are read as typed, or you can enter a diameter you have measured. It uses free diameters, so the loaded rolling diameter will be one to three percent smaller.

The tire sizes above are sidewall markings and never change: 285/70R17 is millimetres of width, a percentage and inches of rim in every market on earth. This chooses the units of the speed, the distance and the diameters below.
The size the vehicle came on, which is what the speedometer and the axle ratio were set up for.
Sidewall marking (285/70R17), flotation size (33x12.50R17), or an overall diameter in inches (32.7).
The axle ratio the vehicle has now. It is on the door sticker or the differential tag.
Direct drive is 1.00. A top overdrive is usually 0.6 to 0.8. Only affects the rpm figures, not the ratios.
In whichever unit you pick below. Leave it blank for 70.
