Beam Calculator

This calculator works out the statics of a single beam: the support reactions, the maximum shear, the maximum bending moment and where it falls, and the deflection curve with its largest sag. You enter the span, a uniform load, a point load and its position, and the two stiffness figures for the section you are already using, the elastic modulus E and the second moment of area I, in metric or imperial units. It draws the loaded beam, the bending moment diagram and the deflected shape alongside the numbers. This is not a design check and it does not size anything: it will not pick a section, will not look up an allowable span and will not tell you whether a beam passes, because that comes from the building code your jurisdiction has adopted and from an engineer who signs for it.

Calculator Type
Units

A single span on two supports, carrying a uniform load, a point load at any position, or both at once.

Centre to centre of the supports, in metres.
Kilonewtons for every metre of span. Leave at zero for a point load only.
kN, or pounds. Leave at zero for a uniform load only.
Measured from the left support, in the same length unit as the span.
GPa in metric (steel is about 200, aluminium 69, softwood 8 to 13), psi in imperial (steel 29,000,000, softwood 1,300,000 to 1,900,000).
cm^4 in metric, in^4 in imperial. Read it off the section tables for the shape you are checking; a rectangle is b x d^3 / 12.

Units

Built in at one end and free at the other, carrying a uniform load, a point load at any position, or both.

The projecting length, from the face of the support to the free end.
kN, or pounds.
Measured from the fixed end. Put it equal to the length for a load right at the tip.
GPa in metric, psi in imperial.
cm^4 in metric, in^4 in imperial.
