HVAC Replacement Cost Calculator

This prices replacing a heating and cooling system from the figures on your own quotes rather than from a national average. Enter the equipment price, the labour hours and rate, any duct work by the foot, the line set, the thermostat, removal, permit, sales tax and rebates, and it returns the total, the net after rebates and the cost per ton. A second action takes a single lump-sum quote and splits it by the labour share you were told, giving the price per ton and per year of expected life. Sizing the system is a separate question answered by the load, tonnage and furnace size calculators; this one only prices the changeout.

Calculator Type
Duct and Capacity In
This moves the duct run, the duct rate and the cooling capacity together, and the answer comes back in the same system. Prices are in dollars either way.
The condenser, air handler, furnace or heat pump itself, as quoted, before labour.
A straight changeout in an accessible basement is usually one to two days for a crew of two. Attic work, a fuel change or moving the equipment is longer.
The shop rate per technician hour. Ask the contractor for theirs rather than leaving the default.
Linear feet, or linear metres if you switched above. Leave at zero if the existing duct is being kept. Sealing and a few transitions are usually in the labour line, not here.
In whichever length you picked above. Left blank this is $35 per foot, or $115 per metre in metric.
Refrigerant recovery, hauling the old unit away and the tipping fee.
Applied to equipment, duct, line set and the thermostat. Labour, permits and disposal are left out of it.
Utility rebates plus any federal or state credit you expect to actually receive.
Tons of refrigeration, or kilowatts if you switched above. Fill this in to get a cost per unit of capacity, which is the figure that makes two quotes for different sized systems comparable.

Capacity In
This moves both capacity boxes and the per-capacity lines in the answer. The price is in dollars either way.
Tons of refrigeration, or kilowatts if you switched above.
BTU per hour, or kilowatts if you switched above. An 80,000 BTU per hour furnace is 23.4 kW.
Ask the contractor. On a straight changeout labour and overhead commonly land between a third and a half of the price.
