Berg Balance Scale Calculator

The Berg Balance Scale scores fourteen observed tasks from 0 to 4, for a total out of 56. Enter each item and this returns the total, the published fall-risk band it falls in, and which tasks scored 0 or 1 so the weak points are visible rather than buried in a single number. A second mode takes a total you already have. The scale is administered by a clinician watching each task against the published criteria, not filled in about yourself, and neither the total nor the band replaces that clinician's judgement.

Calculator Type

Enter 0 to 4 for each task as it was observed. The hints give the top and bottom anchors.

4 = stands without using hands and steadies independently; 0 = needs moderate or maximal help to stand.
4 = stands safely for 2 minutes; 0 = unable to stand 30 seconds unassisted.
4 = sits safely and securely for 2 minutes; 0 = unable to sit without support for 10 seconds.
4 = sits safely with minimal use of the hands; 0 = needs help to sit down.
4 = transfers safely with minor use of the hands; 0 = needs two people to assist or to supervise for safety.
4 = stands 10 seconds safely; 0 = needs help to keep from falling.
4 = places the feet together unaided and stands 1 minute safely; 0 = needs help into position and cannot hold 15 seconds.
4 = reaches forward confidently more than 25 cm, about 10 inches; 0 = loses balance trying, or needs external support.
4 = picks the object up safely and easily; 0 = unable to try, or needs help to stay balanced.
4 = looks behind from both sides with good weight shift; 0 = needs help to avoid losing balance.
4 = turns safely in 4 seconds or less to each side; 0 = needs help while turning.
4 = stands unaided and safely and completes 8 steps in 20 seconds; 0 = needs help to avoid falling, or unable to try.
4 = places the feet in tandem unaided and holds 30 seconds; 0 = loses balance while stepping or standing.
4 = lifts the leg unaided and holds more than 10 seconds; 0 = unable to try, or needs help to prevent a fall.
