Aquarium Substrate Calculator

Work out how much substrate a tank needs before you carry it home. Give the inside footprint and the depth you want, pick gravel, sand, aragonite or a planted mix, and it returns the bed volume, the weight in pounds and kilograms, and the number of bags once you type in a bag weight. Bulk density drives the whole answer, so the figure for each material is shown and can be overridden with whatever the bag prints. A third action runs it backwards: tell it what you already bought and it gives the depth that will spread across, plus a note on whether that depth suits plants.

Bag Weight Is In
Grams per cubic centimetre is the same number as specific gravity, so it means the same thing in either system: 1.60 g/cm3 is 1.60 times the weight of water, and the answer prints the pounds per cubic foot beside it. The bag often gives a weight and a volume; divide one by the other and enter it here.
