Dog Chocolate Toxicity Calculator

This tool estimates the methylxanthine dose a dog has taken from chocolate, using the theobromine and caffeine content per ounce published in the Merck Veterinary Manual. Enter the dog's weight, the type of chocolate and the amount eaten, and it returns the dose in milligrams per kilogram against the published thresholds: mild signs from about 20 mg/kg, cardiac effects at 40 to 50 mg/kg, seizures at 60 mg/kg and above, and a reported oral LD50 of 100 to 200 mg/kg. The amount eaten is almost always a guess, products vary from the published average, and individual dogs react differently, so this is an estimate and never a clearance.
