Absolute Value Equation Calculator

This tool solves an equation with absolute value bars in one variable. You pick the shape, enter the coefficients, and it isolates the bars, splits the equation into its two cases and solves each one. Every candidate is then substituted back, so a root that fails because the other side turns out to be negative is reported as extraneous instead of being given to you as an answer. It takes coefficients rather than typed algebra, and it does not handle bars nested inside other bars.

Calculator Type

The everyday shape. Put 1 for c and 0 for d if there is nothing outside the bars.

Use 1 when the bars stand alone.

A variable on the right as well. This is the shape that produces extraneous roots, so each candidate is substituted back.

Bars on both sides. Both cases give genuine roots here, because neither side can be negative.
