Infinite Series Calculator

This tool handles the four families of infinite series that have a closed form you can write down: geometric, p-series, the telescoping sum of 1 over n times n plus k, and arithmetico-geometric. Pick the family, enter its parameters, and it says whether the series converges, names the test that settles it, and gives the exact sum where one exists. A partial sum over as many terms as you like is computed by adding the terms up, so the closed form always has something to be checked against. Series outside these four need symbolic work this page cannot do, so they are not offered rather than guessed at.

Calculator Type

a + ar + ar^2 + ar^3 + ... , every term the one before it times a fixed ratio.

How many terms to add up, so you can see the partial sum next to the exact one.
Widget

1 + 1/2^p + 1/3^p + ... , which includes the harmonic series at p = 1.

Converges when p is above 1. p = 1 is the harmonic series, which diverges.

Split into partial fractions, almost every term cancels against a later one.

k = 1 gives 1/(n(n+1)), which sums to exactly 1.
