Compression Ratio Calculator

Compression ratio is the swept volume plus the clearance volume divided by the clearance volume, so it needs every space left above the piston at top dead centre. Enter bore, stroke, the measured chamber volume, the gasket bore and compressed thickness, the deck clearance and the piston dish or dome, and the tool adds those volumes up and returns the static ratio with the four pieces shown separately. A second mode takes that static ratio with the rod length and the intake valve closing angle and gives the dynamic ratio, which is lower because the valve shuts after bottom dead centre. The chamber figure has to be measured rather than taken from a catalogue. A ratio on its own does not choose a fuel, because cam timing, chamber shape and cooling all move what an engine will tolerate.

Calculator Type
Units for Bore, Stroke, Deck and Gasket

Bore, stroke, deck clearance and gasket thickness in the same units. Chamber and piston volumes are always in cc.

The finished cylinder diameter, including any overbore.
Measured, not the catalogue number.
Leave at 0 to use the cylinder bore.
Piston top down the bore from the deck. Enter a negative figure if the piston comes out of the block.
Positive for a dish and valve reliefs, negative for a dome, 0 for a flat top.

Units for Bore, Stroke and Rod

Takes the static ratio from the other mode, plus the rod length and the crank angle at which the intake valve closes.

The advertised seat-to-seat figure from the cam card, corrected for how the cam is installed.
Enter 10.5 for 10.5:1. The other mode works this out from the volumes.
