Lumber Calculator

This calculator turns a lumber order into the three numbers a yard and a cut list need: pieces, linear feet and board feet. Pick a nominal size, give the piece length and how many you need, and it returns the count after waste, the board feet you will be billed for and the actual dressed volume you receive, since a 2x4 measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches. The second mode works the other way, cutting a number of pieces at a given length out of the stock lengths sold and allowing for the saw kerf. Prices are optional and come only from the box you fill in, so the cost lines are your yard's numbers rather than an assumed market rate.

Measure In
This sets the lengths you type and the lengths you get back. The nominal size and the stock length are product names and are listed in their own units either way.
A 2x4 is called a 2x4 and measures 1.5 in x 3.5 in, or 38 x 89 mm. Board feet are counted on the name, not the measurement.
Culls, bad crowns and mistakes. Rounded up to whole pieces.
A price per length is read in whichever unit you chose above.

The board as the rack sells it. The seven foot lengths and the six metric lengths are different boards, not the same board twice, so pick the one your merchant actually stocks.
Width of wood the blade turns into sawdust at every cut. Leave it empty for an eighth of an inch, which is 3.175 mm.
