D&D 5e Point Buy Calculator

Point buy is the Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition method where you spend a fixed budget of 27 points across six ability scores, each starting at 8 and costing more as it climbs. Choose a score from 8 to 15 for every ability, add whatever bonus your species or background grants, and the tool prices the set, reports what is left of the budget and gives the modifier for each final score. The cost table is the published one, in which 14 and 15 cost two points per step rather than one, and the same table is priced against the standard array on every run as a check. Bonuses are added after the points are spent, so they never cost anything. Increases from levels, feats and magic items sit outside point buy and are not counted here.

Pick each score between 8 and 15, then add any bonus your species or background grants. Bonuses are applied after the points are spent, so they never cost anything.

27 is the published budget in both the 2014 and the 2024 Player's Handbook. Change it only if your table has agreed on a different number.
