Vacation Budget Calculator

A trip budget is two shapes of money: costs that happen once, like the flights and the car, and costs that scale with the nights and the days. Enter the travellers, the days and nights, the daily spending per person and the fixed lines, add a contingency, and the whole thing comes back broken down with the cost per person per day on top. That per-day figure is the one worth carrying away, because it stays comparable between a long cheap trip and a short expensive one. A second tab runs it backwards and tells you what daily spending money a fixed budget actually leaves.

Calculator Type
Count the days you are actually spending money on the ground, travel days included.
Usually one fewer than the days. Set it to zero for a trip where nobody pays for a bed.
Food, drinks, local transport and the small things. Not lodging and not the big excursions.
Return fare per traveller, including bags and seat fees if you know them.
The room rate the party pays, not a per-person figure.
Tickets, tours, lift passes, park entries. Once per person, not per day.
Car hire, fuel, airport parking, transfers and tolls. For the party, once.
Insurance, visas, vaccinations, gear, pet or house sitting, roaming.
Applied to everything else, last. Ten per cent is the usual figure and five is optimistic.
Fill this in and the saving rate needed to get there appears.
