Standard Form Calculator

Standard form is the British name for scientific notation: every number written as a x 10^n, with a at least 1 and below 10 and n a whole number. Type an ordinary number and this returns the standard form, the mantissa and the power separately, engineering notation, and how many significant figures you actually wrote. It also expands a standard form pair back into a plain number and multiplies, divides, adds or subtracts two numbers written that way, rounded to the significant figures you ask for. Every step is done on the digit string rather than a floating point value, so a long decimal keeps all its digits and the point never drifts. In American algebra lessons standard form means the line Ax + By = C instead, and slope-intercept-form-calculator is the page for that one.
