Board and Batten Calculator

Board and batten comes down to fitting a whole number of battens across a wall, and this works out that spacing for you. Give the wall width and height, the batten width and the gap you have in mind, and it returns the batten count, the gap you actually get, the linear feet and how many stock boards that takes. A second mode covers board and batten siding, where wide boards run vertically and a batten sits over every joint. The gap almost always shifts from the one you asked for, because the battens have to divide the wall evenly. No lumber prices are built in, so nothing here is quoted as a cost.

Calculator Type
Measured In
Wall sizes and board lengths in the first unit of the pair, batten widths and gaps in the second. Every answer comes back the same way.

Battens over a finished wall. Give the wall size and the spacing you have in mind, and the count and the real gap come back.

How tall the battens run, which is the wall height on a full-height treatment and less on a half wall.
The real width of the board, not its nominal name. A 1x4 measures 3.5 in, which is 8.9 cm.
A target in inches. The gap is recalculated so the battens divide the wall evenly.
In feet. Left blank it is taken as 8 ft, the commonest stock length.

Wide boards run vertically with a batten over every joint. Give the wall and the board sizes.

The real width in inches, not the nominal name. A 1x12 measures 11.25 in. Left blank it is taken as 11.25 in.
Room for the boards to move. The batten covers it.
