Deck Stain Calculator

This works out how much stain a deck takes, counting the railing properly rather than treating it as an afterthought. Enter the deck size, the linear feet of railing, the rail height and the baluster spacing, and it adds the four faces of every baluster, three faces of each rail and the posts to the floor area, then divides by a coverage rate. Coverage is set by whether the wood is planed, weathered or rough sawn, and the second coat is given its own higher rate because the first coat has already filled the grain; both figures can be overridden with whatever the tin says. The result is the area, the gallons per coat and the whole gallons to buy.

Units
Linear feet, or linear metres in metric. Add up the open sides. A 20 by 12 deck against a house has 44 ft of railing.
Inches. Left blank it takes 36, the usual railing height.
Inches. Balusters 1.5 in wide at 5 in centres keep the gap under the 4 in a code check looks for.
Square feet per US gallon, or square metres per litre in metric. Leave at 0 to use the usual figure for the surface you picked.
