Grain Bin Capacity Calculator

This calculator turns the size of a round grain bin into bushels. Enter the inside diameter and how deep the grain stands, say whether the top is levelled or heaped at the angle of repose, and pick the crop, and it returns the volume in cubic feet, the bushels, the weight at the test weight, and the bushels a foot of depth is worth. A hopper bottom is handled as a cone below the sidewall, a packing allowance can be added on top of the level volume, and a drying step reports the bushels left after the water comes out. The bin plate rating from a manufacturer is a level-full figure, so expect it to sit below a heaped result here.

This moves the whole form. Every measurement below is read in the system you pick, and every length, area, volume, mass and test weight in the answer comes back in it. The capacity itself stays in bushels, which is what this page is for.
Inside diameter, measured wall to wall through the centre.
How deep the grain stands against the sheeting, not the eave height of the bin.
Only used for a heaped top. A degree is a degree in both systems. Leave at 0 for the usual angle for the crop: about 21 degrees for shelled corn, 25 for soybeans and wheat, 28 for oats and barley.
Sets the standard test weight and the usual angle of repose. Both can be overridden below.
Pounds per bushel, or kilograms per hectolitre if you switched the units above. Leave at 0 to use the standard weight for the crop, which works in either unit. Enter your own when the load has been graded light or heavy.
Grain settles, so a full bin holds more than its level volume. Extension packing tables run at roughly 3 to 10 per cent, rising with depth and with a finer, wetter grain. Leave at 0 for the plain geometric figure.
Leave both moisture fields at 0 to skip the shrink.
The moisture you will sell or store at, commonly 15.0 to 15.5 for corn and 13.0 for soybeans.

Measured from the top of the hopper cone, where the sheeting goes vertical, up to the grain line. Enter 0 for a bin filled no higher than the cone.
Most farm hoppers are built at 37, 45 or 60 degrees. A steeper cone empties more crops cleanly and holds more grain below the sidewall. A degree is a degree in both systems.

Bushels, or metric tonnes if you switched the units above. A tonnage is turned into bushels at the test weight in force, so a light load of the same tonnage needs more room.
Optional. Enter it and the answer says whether the load fits under the eave and how much freeboard is left.
