Grass Seed Calculator

Enter the lawn as a length and width or as a square footage, pick the grass and say whether the ground is bare or already has turf on it, and this returns the pounds of seed, the bags to buy and the starter fertiliser that goes down with it. Seeding rates are published per species as ranges rather than single numbers, so the default sits inside the usual range, the range is printed with the answer and the rate itself is an input for when the bag label says something else. A third option works backwards and tells you what the seed already in the shed will cover. Sowing heavier than the rate gives a thinner lawn, not a thicker one, which is the mistake the published rates exist to prevent.

This moves the whole form. Every measurement, rate, bag size and price below is read in the system you pick, and the answers come back in it. One pound per 1,000 square feet is 4.88 grams per square metre.
Square feet, or square metres in metric. Leave at zero to seed the whole plot.
Pounds per 1,000 square feet. Leave at zero to use the published rate for the grass above. Set it to whatever the bag label says, which is the figure that actually applies to the seed you bought.
In pounds. Leave it blank for a 25 lb sack.
Per pound, or per kilogram in metric. A pound is 0.454 kg, so a price per kilogram is a little over twice the price per pound.
Pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. One pound per 1,000 square feet at seeding is the usual starter rate, and a blank box takes it. Set it to zero to leave fertiliser out.
The first number on the bag. A 20-27-5 starter is 20 percent nitrogen. A percentage is the same in both systems.
