Paver Calculator

This estimates every layer of a paver patio from one set of measurements. Enter the patio size, the paver size and thickness, the joint width and how deep the base and bedding go, and it returns the paver count with waste, tons of crusher run, bedding sand, joint sand in bags, the edge restraint length and how deep to dig. Prices are optional inputs, so nothing is assumed about what a supplier charges. It does not plan the cutting or the fall across the patio, and the base depth is yours to set, because frost depth, soil and traffic decide that number.

Metric reads the patio in metres, every paver and layer thickness in millimetres, and the stone and sand prices per tonne.

Measure the finished patio, give the paver size and how deep the base goes, and this returns every layer as one order list.

The nominal size printed on the pallet, in inches. A holland paver is about 4 x 8 in, and a common patio slab 12 x 12 in.
The other nominal dimension off the pallet, in inches. A holland paver is 4 in on this side.
A standard concrete paver is 60 mm, about 2.375 in. This sets the joint depth and the depth you dig to. Blank uses 2.375 in, or 60 mm in metric.
Pavers with moulded spacer bars sit about 1/8 in apart, which is 0.125, or about 3 mm. Enter 0 for slabs laid tight. Blank uses 1/8 in, or 3 mm in metric.
Around 5 percent for a square patio in a running bond, 10 or more for herringbone, a diagonal or any curved edge, because every cut wastes most of a paver.
4 in of crusher run under a patio or walkway, 6 to 8 under a driveway, and more in clay or where the ground freezes deep. In millimetres that is 100 under a patio and 150 to 200 under a drive. Your local code or supplier is the authority here. Blank uses 4 in, or 100 mm in metric.
Crusher run loses roughly 15 to 20 percent of its loose volume under a plate compactor, so the depth above being the finished depth means ordering more than the bare volume.
One inch of coarse concrete sand screeded flat is the standard, 25 mm in metric. A thicker bed ruts under traffic, and bedding sand is never used to level a bad base. Blank uses 1 in, or 25 mm in metric.

For a shape that is not a rectangle, or a base that is already down: measure the area yourself and get the paver count.

Square feet, or square metres if you picked metric above. Break an odd shape into rectangles and triangles, work each one out, and add them up.

Off the supplier price list. Leave it empty if you are buying loose.
