Steel Weight Calculator

This calculator works out what a length of metal section weighs from its shape, its size and the density of the material. Pick round bar, square or hex bar, flat bar and plate, pipe, square or rectangular tube, angle, or an I or H beam, enter the dimensions in inches or millimetres along with the length and how many pieces you need, and choose a material or type in your own density. It returns the cross section area, the weight per foot and per metre, the weight of one piece and the total for the order. Rolled shapes are calculated with square corners, so the result names where a published mill table will read a little heavier or lighter and why.

Solid round stock. Enter the diameter in inches, or in millimetres if you switch the unit selector.

The outside diameter of the solid bar.
Use this to match your supplier. Multiply lb/ft3 by 16.0185 to get kg/m3, so the 489.5 lb/ft3 behind the usual American steel tables is 7841 kg/m3.

A rectangular section. A flat bar is a width and a thickness carried along a length; a plate is the same arithmetic with the length being the longer side of the sheet.

Use this to match your supplier. Multiply lb/ft3 by 16.0185 to get kg/m3, so the 489.5 lb/ft3 behind the usual American steel tables is 7841 kg/m3.

A hollow round section from the outside diameter and the wall thickness. For a pipe sold by nominal size, use the real outside diameter: 2 inch schedule 40 is 2.375 in outside with a 0.154 in wall.

Use this to match your supplier. Multiply lb/ft3 by 16.0185 to get kg/m3, so the 489.5 lb/ft3 behind the usual American steel tables is 7841 kg/m3.

A box section from the outside width, the outside height and the wall thickness. Square tube is the same width and height.

Use this to match your supplier. Multiply lb/ft3 by 16.0185 to get kg/m3, so the 489.5 lb/ft3 behind the usual American steel tables is 7841 kg/m3.

An L section from the two leg lengths and the thickness. Equal angle is the same leg twice.

Use this to match your supplier. Multiply lb/ft3 by 16.0185 to get kg/m3, so the 489.5 lb/ft3 behind the usual American steel tables is 7841 kg/m3.

An I or H section built from two flanges and a web. For a channel, enter the flange width once and it is counted twice, which is how a C section is shaped too.

The full height of the section, outside to outside.
