Bike Seat Height Calculator

Two published formulas set saddle height from a rider's inseam, and this tool runs both instead of averaging them into a single answer. Enter your barefoot inseam and your crank length and you get the LeMond figure at 0.883 of inseam, the Hamley and Thomas figure at 109 per cent measured from the pedal, the gap between them and a starting point to ride from. A second action works out how far to move the saddle after a crank length or shoe stack change. The two methods usually land a centimetre or so apart, which is the honest width of the answer; the Holmes knee angle check settles it, and that has to be taken on the bike.

Inseam Unit

Both published formulas, each named, with the gap between them stated instead of hidden.

Barefoot crotch to floor, not the inside leg on a pair of trousers.
Stamped on the back of the crank arm. 170, 172.5 and 175 are the common road lengths.

Height Unit

What matters to your leg is the saddle to pedal distance, so changing crank length or shoe stack moves the saddle by the same amount the other way.

Positive if the new shoes and cleats hold your foot further from the pedal axle, negative if closer. Leave at zero if nothing else changed.
