Brick Calculator

This counts the bricks and the mortar for a wall from the wall's measurements and the brick's face size. Enter the length and height, take out the doors and windows, choose a brick from the nine standard sizes or type one in from a supplier data sheet, and set the mortar joint and a waste allowance. It returns the bricks to buy, the bricks per square foot, the courses, the bags of mortar and, if you add prices, the cost. A brick fills a cell of its own face plus one joint, which is why the count depends on the joint width as much as on the brick itself. The footing, wall ties, lintels and cavity insulation are not counted.

Measure the wall face, take the openings out, and this returns the bricks, the courses and the mortar bags.

Total face area of every opening, in square feet or square metres to match the choice above, taken out of the wall before the bricks are counted.
A brick veneer on a framed house is a single wythe. A solid garden or retaining wall is usually two.
These are specified face sizes, the brick itself without its joint. Choose custom to enter a size from a supplier data sheet.
Used only when the size above is set to custom, in inches. Left blank you get the modular face of 7 5/8 in.
Used only when the size above is set to custom, in inches. Left blank you get the modular face of 2 1/4 in. For brick laid flat as paving, enter the width you will see instead of the height.
3/8 in (0.375) is the standard joint and the one the nominal sizes assume; 1/2 in (0.5) is the other common one. Left blank you get 3/8 in.
Breakage, cuts and closers. Around 5% on a plain run of wall, 10% or more once there are openings, corners or a pattern bond.
An 80 lb bag of mortar mix lays roughly 30 to 40 bricks at a 3/8 in joint. Check the coverage on the bag you are buying.

For an odd shape, a gable or a paved area: work the square footage out yourself and get the brick count. For brick laid flat as paving, choose the custom size and enter the length and width of the face that will show.

Square feet, or square metres if you chose metres and millimetres above. Break an odd shape into rectangles and triangles, work each one out and add them up.
