Drop Ceiling Calculator

This calculator lays out a suspended ceiling grid for a rectangular room and counts the parts. Enter the room size in feet and inches or metres, the panel size and the runner direction, and it returns the border cuts, panels, main runners, cross tees, wall angle and hanger wire. Add your own part prices, an installer's rate per square foot or square metre and any other costs to get a material and installed cost estimate. It assumes the North American 2 ft grid and a plain rectangular room.

Room Measured In
Switches the room, the border cuts, the drop and every running total on the answer.

Measure the room wall to wall at ceiling height. Pick feet and inches or metres and centimetres; the two fields for each wall are added together either way. The grid parts themselves are the North American 2 ft module and are named in feet whichever you pick.

Both names are the same carton: the North American 2 ft grid is sold as 610 and 1220 mm in metric markets. A true 600 x 600 or 600 x 1200 mm European grid sits on a different runner spacing and this page does not lay it out.
Runners go across the joists, so they usually follow the longer wall.
Inches. Leave it blank to skip the hanger wire figures. Allow at least 3 in, and 6 in where recessed lights go in.
The installer's rate per square foot of ceiling. Leave it blank for a materials-only figure.
A lump sum for anything else on the quote: taking down the old ceiling, light fittings, haul-away, a permit.
