Exterior Paint Calculator

This works out how much paint the outside of a house takes. Enter the perimeter, the wall height, the gable area, the doors and windows to deduct, the coats and the coverage off the can, and it returns the net wall area and the gallons of body paint, with the soffit, the trim and the primer counted as separate products because they rarely share a tin. Surface texture is taken off the coverage rather than added as a fudge factor, so rough stucco and shakes come out heavier than flat board, which is where most estimates go wrong. Openings are deducted at the trade figures of 21 square feet a door and 15 a window. It returns gallons only, not cost or labour.

Measurements and Coverage In
This moves the whole form. Every length, every area, the trim width and both coverage rates are read in the system you pick here, and the quantities come back in it too.
All the way round the house at ground level, in feet or in metres. A 50 ft by 30 ft rectangle is 160 ft; a 15 m by 9 m one is 48 m.
Every storey together, from the foundation to the eaves, in feet or in metres. Not the height of one floor.
Square feet, or square metres in metric. A gable triangle is half its width times its rise. A 30 ft gable rising 8 ft is 120 sq ft. Add every gable and dormer face.
Each one comes off at 21 sq ft, which is 1.95 square metres.
Each one comes off at 15 sq ft, which is 1.39 square metres.
Square feet, or square metres in metric. Garage doors, picture windows, sliding doors. A 16 ft by 7 ft double garage door is 112 sq ft.
Texture is taken off the coverage per gallon, because rough surfaces drink paint.
Off the can, for one coat on a smooth surface, in square feet per US gallon. The texture setting reduces it from there. Left blank it is 350 sq ft per gallon.
The overhang measured from the wall to the fascia, in feet or in metres. Soffit area is taken as the perimeter times this width. Leave at zero if you are not painting it.
Linear feet, or linear metres in metric. Fascia, corner boards, window and door casings, rake boards. Add up the running length.
In inches, across the face of the board. Left blank it is 6 in.
Square feet per US gallon. Left blank it is 300 sq ft per gallon.
