Exterior Paint Cost Calculator

This works out what painting the outside of a house costs, starting from the measurements rather than from a square footage you have to work out first. Enter the footprint and the number of storeys, or the perimeter and the total wall height, add the gable area and the door and window counts, and it returns the surface to paint, the gallons of body paint, trim paint and primer to buy, and the cost split between paint, labour and preparation. Trim, soffit and fascia are priced apart from the siding, because on an exterior job they are a different can at a different price. There is no built-in price list, so every rate comes from you. Coverage per gallon matters more here than any price does: rough sawn or chalky siding can halve it, and the gallon count moves with it.

Measurements and Coverage In
Moves every measurement you type, the coverage, the paint prices, the labour rate and every figure on the answer. A price per gallon and a price per litre are not the same number.
The footprint measured outside to outside, front wall, in feet.
Floor to the top of the wall in feet, so about 9 ft for an 8 ft ceiling once the joists are counted. Leave it blank for that 9 ft.
Square feet, or square metres if you chose metric. A triangular gable is half its base times its height. Two identical gables are simply the base times the height.
Deducted at 21 sq ft each, which is 1.95 sq m. Count the garage door separately in the gable box if it is much larger.
Deducted at 15 sq ft each, which is 1.39 sq m.
Square feet, or square metres if you chose metric. Painted with the trim paint below. A run of fascia is its length times its depth; corner boards and window casings are usually 6 to 8 inches, or 150 to 200 mm, wide, so a foot of run is about 0.6 sq ft and a metre of run about 0.18 sq m.
The can states it for a smooth surface. Leave it blank for 350 sq ft a gallon, and drop it for rough or porous siding.
Per US gallon. What one tin of the size you are buying costs is a different question; this is the rate.
Leave at the body price if you are using one paint throughout.
Zero on sound paint. One on bare wood, heavy patching or a big colour change.
Per square foot, or per square metre if you chose metric. Charged once on the surface area rather than once per coat. Leave at zero if you are painting it yourself.
Pressure washing, scraping, sanding and masking, quoted as a lump sum on most exterior jobs. A lump sum, so it is the same figure whichever units you picked.

Walk the house and add up every wall in feet, including the returns on an L or a bump-out.
Ground to the eaves in feet, all storeys together, not the height of one storey. Leave it blank for 9 ft.
