Hardwood Flooring Calculator

This calculator turns a room measurement into a flooring order. Enter the length and width, anything extra like closets and hallways, a waste allowance and the square feet printed on one box, and it returns the area, the area with waste, the boxes to buy, what is purchased once the boxes round up and what is left over. Give a board width and length as well and it counts the boards, works out how many full rows cross the room and how narrow the last row gets, which is worth knowing before the first board goes down. Box coverage is asked for rather than assumed, because hardwood is boxed anywhere from about 18 to 25 square feet depending on the product. It handles materials only and has no prices in it.

The coverage printed on the box goes with it, square feet or square metres, and so do the board dimensions, inches or millimetres.

Length and width in the unit you pick, with anything else the floor runs into added as an area. Give the board size as well and it counts the boards and the rows across the room.

Wall to wall. A room 20 ft 6 in long is 20.5, and one 6 m 25 cm long is 6.25.
Measured across the direction the boards will run.
Anything outside the main rectangle, in square feet. Subtract nothing for a kitchen island or a hearth unless it is bigger than about 10 sq ft.
Offcuts at the walls, at doorways and at the end of each row, plus culled boards.
Printed on the carton, in square feet. Hardwood is commonly boxed between 18 and 25 sq ft, and it differs by width and by product. Left blank it takes 20 sq ft.
The width you see once it is down, not including the tongue, in inches or in millimetres. Leave at 0 to skip the board count.
In inches or in millimetres, matching the unit above. Use the average length if the box holds a mix, which most of them do.
