Reading Speed Calculator

This works out how fast you actually read, in words a minute, from a passage you time yourself on. Paste the text, or enter a word count or a number of pages, add the minutes and seconds it took, and it returns your speed, where that sits against the 238 words a minute average for adult silent reading, and how long a novel would take you. Add a comprehension score and it also gives the effective reading rate, which is speed multiplied by how much you retained. Speed alone is easy to inflate by skimming, so the two figures belong together.

Calculator Type

Paste the passage you just read, then enter how long it took. The word count is taken from the text itself, so nothing has to be counted by hand.

If you answered questions on the passage afterwards, enter the share you got right. Leave blank to skip it.

If the word count came from a word processor or the page itself, enter it here instead of pasting the text.

Count the words on one full page, multiply nothing, and let this do the rest. A mass market paperback runs about 275 words a page and a hardback about 350.

Count one full page of your own book and use that. Page density varies more than reading speed does.
